Sarah Alice "Virginia" Dorsey Martin, known to her closest friends and relatives as "Honey", died peacefully in her sleep under Hospice care at Spanish Oaks Retreat on Saturday evening, October 31, 2009. She was born in Cordele, Georgia on November 11, 1920. She attended and graduated the public school system in Savannah; and went on to work for the Chatham County Board of Public Education both as a secretary at Eli Whitney Elementary School and Savannah High School, and later, as a Purchasing Agent with the Board. She finished her career as a Purchasing Agent with Georgia Regional Hospital in Savannah. Early in her career, she also served as Church Secretary of Whitefield United Methodist Church.

Best known for her service to others, she was a member of Order of Eastern Star, White Star Chapter 367 where she was elected Worthy Matron five different times. She also served as High Priestess of Eela Court, Ladies Shrine. She was a member of the Savannah Area Republican Women, the Savannah Christian Women's Club, Generation One, Smart Senior, the Savannah Women's Club and the Savannah Classic Club. She was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church.

She was pre-deceased by her husband of sixty-one years, Rubert C. Martin, Sr.; ten brothers; Frederick E. Dorsey, Sidney L. Dorsey, Francis E. Dorsey, George M. Dorsey, John M. Dorsey, A. Calvin Dorsey, William A. "Pete" Dorsey, Otis W. Dorsey, Bernice L. Dorsey and E. Glenn Dorsey; and one sister, Mary Jane D. Newman. She is survived by two daughters and their families; Virginia D. and Eugene A. Henderson, Sr., and Mary Jane and Leiston T. Shuman, Jr.; and by one son, Rubert C. "Buddy" Martin, Jr. and his wife Beverly K., and their family. She is also survived by three sisters; Edith K. Caylor of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina; A. Elizabeth "Beth" Milligan of Savannah; and Eleanor B. Gideau of Black Lick, Ohio; and by eight grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, their families, and extended families.

A visitation is planned for those wishing to pay their final respect to Mrs. Martin on Friday evening, 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., at Fox and Weeks Funeral Home on Hodgson Memorial Drive. The funeral will be held Saturday morning, November 7, 2009 at 11:00 a.m., in the sanctuary of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Bull and 31st. Streets, Savannah, Georgia. Interment will be at Bonaventure Cemetery following the service.
